Clergy and Licensed Lay Ministers
Team Rector and Priest in charge: The Revd Philippa Good Tel: 07538 595537
The Revd Philippa Good, ‘Phili’, was born in Esher and brought up in Salisbury. She is married to Charles and has four children. She also has dogs and a cat. Phili trained for ministry through the Portsmouth Pathway, a Diocesan based course which is linked to Cuddesdon Theological College and uses the Durham Awards programme. Her Curacy was spent in Farlington, near Portsmouth where the term ‘I have had an idea’ was first heard and kindly joined in with! Her previous job was in the Meon Valley, between Winchester and Petersfield, looking after four churches, learning to balance the needs of differing rural churches and locations and exploring further where her ministry would take her.
Mr Stephen Baldock: Lay Worship Leader
Stephen was High Master of St Paul’s School in West London and has lived in Over Wallop since his retirement in 2004. He has been churchwarden and is now secretary of the Team Council. He helps to run a weekly home group, leads Sunday worship from time to time and plays organ in the absence of a professional. He is married to Janet, a former GP and now church Treasurer; they have four adult children and nine grandchildren.
The Revd Matthew Grayshon, Associate Priest
Matthew was ordained in 1981 and served in three parishes (Beverley Minster, Hallwood Cheshire and St Mary’s Hanwell) before moving to Amport in 2016. He has led several teams to the Democratic Republic of Congo in order to support the clergy there and is now the representative for the Diocese of Winchester for partnerships with the Church in Africa. He is married to Jane and has two grown-up children.
Mr Geoff Wortley: Lay Worship Minister
Geoff has been a confirmed member of the Church of England for over fifty-five years. In 1960, he felt called to lay ministry and began to train for Readership, but then career building and other life changes interrupted it. He has great experience in church administration and since being licensed in Norwich in 2005 he has ministered in a six-parish benefice, and a thirty-seven parish deanery, and having moved to Hampshire in 2013, now enjoys his ministry in the Portway and Danebury Team. He is trained in funeral ministry and is glad to undertake this work as requested.
John Searles: Ordinand
John has led worship and preached in the Benefice for several years, having been a Lay Worship Leader with the Bishop’s Permission to Preach and then a Licensed Lay Minister. He has lived in Over Wallop for many years and has served St Peter’s church as churchwarden and PCC member. John spent 24 years in finance in the City of London and in industry. He studied theology and pastoral studies part-time at Wycliffe Hall (2012 to 2016) and then trained at the Winchester School of Mission which led to his becoming a Licensed Lay Minister in October 2024. In June 2025 John was accepted as a candidate for Ordination and is to be ordained Deacon in June 2026 and, if all goes well, as Priest in June 2027. Ian Willis: Licensed Lay Preacher
Ian’s Christian journey began at university. He spent eleven years in the army (including three years in Northern Ireland) and ran his own Executive Search Business for a long time. For ten years he was Chair of a Missionary Society which focussed on supporting Christians in the Military. He has been a trustee of RUSI, a Whitehall-based think tank specialising in defence and security. Having been a PCC member and regular speaker at his previous church in Andover, he was commissioned in Winchester Cathedral on October 12th this year as a Lay Preacher and now preaches on a regular basis across the Benefice. He is married to Kitty, who is a psychotherapist and Spiritual Director; they have three children and two grandchildren.
